Air Conditioner Basics

Indoor Coil

The indoor coil is where the refrigerant is run through to pull heat and moisture from the air inside your home. The refrigerant enters the indoor coil and as the air goes across the coil the refrigerant picks up heat from the indoor air and takes it outside to the condenser where it is released.

Outside Condenser

The condenser is where the refrigerant goes to release the heat that was picked up in your home and release it to the outside.

TXV or Piston (Metering Device)

This is like a carburetor or fuel injection on your car. This is a metering device that regulates the flow of refrigerant to the coil to maintain a certain temperature on the coil.

Compressor

The compressor is located in the center of the outdoor condenser unit. The compressor takes the low pressure vapor gas coming from the indoor coil and compresses it into a high pressure liquid gas.

Air Conditioner Facts

Air conditioners do not, in fact, make the air colder in your home. An air conditioner pulls the humidity or moisture out of your home which in return makes the air feel cooler at the same temperature.

Changing Your Filter

A home owner should check their furnace filter every month to see if it needs to be replaced. Every home is different depending on the amount of traffic, where the home is, and so on. A dirty filter is the #1 cause of an air conditioner or furnace not being able to cool or heat properly.
